Meet Alex ‘Snowie’ Snow, our new Secretary
1 Mar 2023 - I am delighted to announce that Alex ‘Snowie’ Snow has kindly consented to supersede Kyle De-Banks as Secretary of the MCDOA. Please join me in thanking Kyle for all his efforts over the past few years to ensure the continuing success of our organisation.
The office of Secretary now subsumes that of Membership Secretary and we should all thank Alasdair Magill, the original incumbent, for setting up the MOJO website incorporating our membership database which greatly facilitates our operations. We should also be grateful to Fraser Watt for continuing to cast his net for new members.
Snowie is due to take Command of HMS PUNCHER in April pending successful completion of his PNO (Preliminary Navigating Officer) course. He began his Naval career as an RNR Intelligence Branch rating whilst studying History at Portsmouth University. Following initial officer training at Britannia Royal Naval College Dartmouth, he undertook CFT (Common Fleet Time) and SFT (Specialist Fleet Training) in LPDs (Landing Pad (Dock)s), Sandown class MCMVs, Type 45 destroyers. He also enjoyed a rewarding Caribbean merchant acquaint with Geest Line. He served his first complement assignment as Officer-of-the-Watch 4 in HMS DEFENDER when he was also loaned to HMS SHOREHAM and to HMS SMITER for her Baltic deployment.
Following a holdover at NATO MARCOM, Snowie attended MWO, MCDO and EOD courses before joining MCM1 Crew 6 as the Operations Officer. He underwent OST (Operational Sea Training), JOINT WARRIOR and two KIPION rotations on board HMS GRIMSBY and HMS BANGOR.
Snowie lives on the Isle of Wight with his partner where he enjoys cycling, surfing, running and any outdoor sports that rely on ‘grizzing it’ rather than an aptitude for hand-eye coordination. He is discovering that SCUBA diving can be an enjoyable pastime when pursued outside Horsea Lake and is working towards his BSAC dive leader qualification.
I am sure all members of our Association will join me in thanking Alex for volunteering to take up the post of Acting Secretary, pending his formal confirmation at our next AGM, and wish him well in his new Command appointment.
