Death of Surg Cdr Robert 'Bob' De Goldthorp Hanson RN

10 Oct 2022 - I have been informed by Surg Cdre Jim Sykes that his fellow respected diving medicine specialist and associate member of the MCDOA Bob Hanson crossed the bar in Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cosham on Tuesday 4 October. He had been ill for some time.

Bob joined the Royal Navy as a Surg Lt in 1961 and subsequently served in the minelayer HMS MANXMAN (1964-66). After promotion to Surg Lt Cdr in 1966, he served in the repair ship HMS MULL OF KINTYRE (1967-68), HMS VERNON (1969), HMS PRESIDENT in London (1970-71), the Institute of Naval Medicine at Alverstoke where he was promoted to Surg Cdr in 1973 (1972-79), NP 1007 Sat Diving Team embarked in MV SEAFORTH CLANSMAN (1979-82), HMS PEMBROKE (1982), NP 2200 Sat Diving Team embarked in MV STENA SEASPREAD (1983) and the RN Hospital Gibraltar (1984).

I am sure all members of our community will join me in extending our sincere condolences to Bob's family and close friends. His funeral is expected to take place at the Oaks Crematorium, Havant. Details will be announced when available.

Postscript: Bob Hanson’s funeral will take place at the Oaks Crematorium, Havant at 1430 on Tuesday 8 November 2022. No flowers and no mourning dress (black tie etc). A good masonic and RBL presence is expected.
