Death of Lt Cdr Stephen Nigel Crawford Field RN

16 Jul 2023 - MCDOA member Kim Godfrey (right in accompanying photo) has informed me that fellow MCDO Steve Field (left in photo) crossed the bar yesterday in Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cosham.

Steve Field and Kim Godfrey in May 2016

Steve joined the Royal Navy as a midshipman in 1974 and served in the Leander class frigate HMS ANDROMEDA, the Type 12 frigate HMS RHYL and the Island class offshore patrol vessel HMS ORKNEY before qualifying as an MCDO at HMS VERNON in 1978. He then served in the Ton class minehunter HMS SHERATON, Naval Party 2030 (Fleet Clearance Diving Team 5 during and after the Falklands conflict), HMS VERNON as LMCDO Course Officer, DEODS (Defence Explosive Ordnance Disposal School at Chattenden in Kent) as the Naval Training Officer and the Third MCM Squadron as the Squadron Operations Officer.

In 1994, Steve took Command of the first-of-class minehunter HMS SANDOWN and this was followed by a job in the Ministry of Defence and an exchange posting with the US Navy before taking charge of the Mine Warfare Training Section at the Maritime Warfare School at HMS COLLINGWOOD. His last appointment was at the Defence Diving School before he left the Royal Navy in 2005 to join the Health & Safety Executive as a Specialist Diving Inspector.
