Roger Readwin completes high-profile role in Washington

10 Jul 2025 - After four years in the post, MCDOA past-President Roger Readwin has finished his time as the UK’s Naval Attache in Washington, DC. This was his hauling down message on his LinkedIn profile:

“After three rewarding years as the Naval Attaché to the USA, I’ve now handed over to my good friend Commodore Gus Carnie RN.

There have been many professional highlights from the Artic to Bunker Hill — but it’s the people who made the greatest impact. From the brilliant team I had the privilege to lead, to the families who stood strong thousands of miles from home, your support made all the difference.

A special thanks to the senior leadership of the US Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. Your warmth and trust helped deepen a bond between our nations that’s built on values, friendship, and shared purpose.

The Delivering Combined Seapower framework is more than a concept — it’s a commitment. One that positions the Royal Navy not only as interoperable with our US counterparts, but increasingly interchangeable. That matters. Because the challenges ahead demand nothing less.

Here’s to enduring partnerships, sea power, and staying shoulder to shoulder.”

Excerpt from the National Defence Industrial Association website:

“Commodore Readwin was born in 1972, educated at Seaford College, West Sussex and joined the Royal Navy as a Warfare Officer in 1991. Specialising initially as a Mine Clearance Diving Officer and then as a Surface Warfare Officer in 2004, he served in Mine Countermeasure Vessels, at Britannia Royal Naval College, the 2* Maritime Battle Staff, and Type 23 Frigates. His seagoing career completed with Command of the Type 23 frigate HMS SUTHERLAND, with operational service in the Mediterranean and the Gulf.

Post Sea Command he attended the US Naval War College (2012-13), reading a Masters in International Relations, followed by two years in the Pentagon as the Liaison Officer to the US Chief of Navy Operations (2013-15). On return to the UK, he Commanded the Fleet Diving Squadron, and was then promoted to Captain in 2016, assuming Command as Captain Mine Warfare and Patrol Vessels, Diving and Fishery Protection. He was then a member at the prestigious Royal College of Defence Studies (2018-19) and then selected in September 2019, as the Captain of Britannia Royal Naval College, responsible for training future Naval Officers.

Thereafter, he was promoted to Commodore, and was assigned as the Naval Attaché to the USA in July 2022.

Commodore Readwin is married and has three children. A former Navy Rugby player, with six Inter-Service Caps, Director of Navy Rugby (2016-19) and Chairman of Navy Rugby (2021-22). A competitive one design yacht sailor, he also maintains close links with the merchant navy as a Freeman of the Honourable Company of Master Mariners.”

I am sure everyone in our community will join me in congratulating Roger on his fine achievement during some turbulent times and wish him well in whatever the future holds for him.
